5 Ways to stay subtly sober at your wedding

Your wedding day can be hectic, filled with nerves leading up to the ceremony,
through the formalities, and to the first dance. As you mingle, you may find yourself sharing a few alcoholic beverages with your wedding party and socialising during this time.
Unlike your guests, however, there are formalities that you may be nervous about and want to feel your best to handle.

While your guests likely won’t care whether or not you’re drinking, it’s sometimes nice to give the impression of enjoying a drink socially. With that in mind, here are five ways to sneakily stay sober throughout the evening.

1. Switch bubbles with grape juice
Sometimes, the best way to stay sober is not to drink at all while still giving the impression of drinking. This may be to wait until after the formalities or because you’re unable to drink for other reasons, such as pregnancy. Grape juice is an excellent substitute for bubbles.
It has a similar appearance in colour and, being carbonated can easily pass as a glass of bubbles.

To pull off this swap, have the bar staff pour the drink behind the bar and then serve it directly to your bridal party. Alternatively, you can ask the staff to fill an empty champagne bottle with grape juice and serve it to your table like everyone else’s. This way, you can discreetly enjoy your non-alcoholic option.

2. Opt for low-alcohol beverages
Various low-alcohol options can help maintain a light buzz without getting too tipsy,
which can especially be great for those who either have a low alcohol tolerance or want to avoid becoming too tipsy throughout the night. The most well-known alternative is
low-alcohol beers, which can be poured into a glass, appearing visibly like a beer, and everyone around you will be none the wiser. Other options include Moscato wine, which has a lower percentage of alcohol compared to standard bubbles. Just be aware that its sweeter taste can make it easier to overindulge. Furthermore, 0% alternatives can provide a sober mimic in appearance and taste to their alcoholic counterparts.

3. Mock-tails
Cocktails are a classy addition to any wedding, but they can pack a punch due to their high alcohol content. An easy workaround is to have special mock-tails crafted just for you or any other sober guests. This could include a mocktail station, complete with cocktail glasses and garnishes, so your drink appears like an elegant cocktail

If you want to be even more subtle, ask to add a ‘bride/groom special’ onto the bar menu on your special day. This drink could be identical in appearance to another cocktail on the menu but alcohol-free or a delicious mocktail specifically for you, highlighting how special you are on your wedding day.

4. Stay hydrated and keep eating throughout the evening
It goes without saying, drinking plenty of water and eating regularly is crucial—especially during hot summer weddings. Staying hydrated will not only keep you feeling good but can also slow you down if you’re consuming alcohol. It’s also often the last thing on your mind on your wedding day and can be challenging to remember. One tip to overcome this is to assign a bridesmaid or groomsman as your reminder to eat and drink throughout the night. Additionally, most venues will have staff bringing food to wherever you are, such as during your photo session. Be sure to take advantage of those moments to enjoy the delicious canapés.

5. Take small breaks from drinking
Taking small breaks from drinking is a great way to stay sober, and it’s easy for the couple since the day naturally includes built-in pauses. For example, during your couples’ photo session, it’s just the two of you for an extended period—an ideal time to take a break from alcohol. Some venues, such as Markovina Estate, also have a private bridal room where you can refresh, touch up your makeup, or enjoy a moment of quiet between formalities. These small moments are perfect for stepping away from alcohol subtly.

Overall, it’s your wedding day, and enjoying it in the best way for you and your spouse-to-be is important. With these tips, you can create a wedding experience that's both joyful and mindful.
